This sign at the pitfalls on Romanonkangas heath in Parikkala tells of its protected status. Not all antiquities are identified with protection signs.
Antiquities are protected immediately upon discovery. No special decision is required to obtain protection. Protection means that no one is permitted to interfere with the antiquity in any way.

Information about the past is stratified in the antiquities. They tell of a time about which we could otherwise know nothing. Antiquities are a national archive preserved in the earth. When we protect antiquities, we are actually preserving knowledge of how our own culture has developed into what it is today.

Finland's Antiquities Act (295/63) guarantees preservation of antiquities and defines what they are. The National Board of Antiquities has responsibility for matters related to antiquities.
