11. Huusniemi Stone-Age dwelling site in Joutseno
Huusniemi was first settled in the Typical Combed Ware period about 6000 years ago. It was populated in the period from 4000-1900 B.C. Studies have uncovered pieces of pottery as well as stone remnants, fragments left from making things from stone. At the tip of the cape there is what may be the foundation of an ancient dwelling. It is visible as a low oval-like depression in the ground. Near the depression, a lot of burnt bone and stone remnants left from making stone objects have been collected. The Huusniemi settlement was discovered in 1998.
Driving directions: The site is located on the cape immediately behind Cafe Karhusalmi (tel. 0400-409817) next to the Mietinsaari ferry. Parking area in front of the cafe.
