Five different prehistoric population concentrations are known in the Korosniemi area. The area has been populated from the Combed Ware period to the end of the Stone Age or the beginning of the Early Metal Age. The clearest settlement phase dates back 6000 years ago to the Typical Combed Ware period (3900-3400 B.C.). At that time the Korosniemi region was an archipelago. When the Saimaa's Vuoksi outlet channel broke open some 6000 years ago, the surface of Lake Saimaa dropped about three metres and the region began to take shape as we know it today. People lived on the islands both before and after the opening of the Vuoksi.

Studies at the dwelling sites have revealed pieces of pottery, a fragment of a stone object, broken pieces of stone, and burnt bone chips left from the meals of ancient peoples.
