5. Stone-Age dwelling site at Murheistenranta in Lappeenranta
People were already living at the Stone-Age dwelling site in Murheistenranta some 6000 years ago. It is thought that the settlement dates from the Typical Combed Ware period (3900-3400 B.C.).The dwelling site is located on a bluff that was long ago the shore of Lake Saimaa. When the River Vuoksi broke open its outlet channel at Imatra about 6000 years ago, the Saimaa waters began to drop and the dwelling site was left gradually farther and farther away from the shoreline. The size of the dwelling site is not known, because precise studies have not been conducted at the site. Pieces of pottery, burnt bone, and quartz fragments, or chips of stone from the making of stone objects, have been found at the settlement. A public swimming beach is located there.
Driving directions: From the centre of Lappeenranta, drive to Muukontie road, which crosses the Saimaa Canal. After the canal, turn left on Suolavuorentie road and then immediately right onto Sirkkelimiehenkatu street. Go about 800 metres. The site is immediately on the right side of the street. There is a public swimming beach on the left . Cars or a bus can park along the road.
