21. Cultural landscape at Tarnala in Saari
The village landscape of Tarnala is among the nationally most valuable landscape areas of South Karelia. The village landscape exemplifies Karelia's Lake Ladoga region's diverse nature and traditional features with its waters, forests and patches of field. From the village to Lake Ladoga it is 32 km as the crow flies. The main natural elements of the landscape are Pieni Rautjärvi Lake and the high moraine. The village built on the moraine represents Lake Finland's most traditional type of dwelling, hill dwellings. The stages of dwellings from different time periods represented in the village area reach from the Stone Age to the present.

Driving directions: From Highway 6 turn toward Uukuniemi (road no. 4021) and drive about 800 metres. There is a sign at the lay-by on the right side of the road before the village of Tarnala. There is a nature path in the area. Contact the municipality of Saari (tel. 05-688 150) for more information.
